Why is Napier Prison said to be haunted?
Built in 1862 on a hill overlooking Napier's harbour, Napier Prison served as Hawke's Bay's main jail for 131 years before closing in 1993, making it the oldest surviving prison complex in New Zealand. Its cramped stone cells held everyone from petty thieves to condemned murderers, and the prison yard was the site of hangings carried out under the colonial and early national justice system. Since reopening as a visitor attraction, staff and guests on the prison's long-running night tours have reported disembodied voices in the solitary confinement cells, sudden drops in temperature near the old gallows site, and cell doors slamming shut in corridors known to be empty. The 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake, which badly damaged the complex and killed several inmates trapped inside, is often cited locally as adding its own layer of trauma to the site's long, difficult history.
