Why is Riccarton, New Zealand said to be haunted?

Long before it became a leafy Christchurch suburb, Riccarton was the site chosen in 1843 by Scottish brothers William and John Deans for the first permanent European farm on the Canterbury Plains, built beside a stand of ancient kahikatea forest known today as Riccarton Bush. John Deans died of tuberculosis in 1854, only in his thirties, leaving his young widow Jane to manage the growing homestead alone; the house was expanded over the following decades into the grand Riccarton House that still stands. Generations of caretakers and visitors have reported the sensation of being watched in its upstairs rooms, doors that swing shut unassisted, and, on still evenings near the bush, the impression of a woman in old-fashioned dress said by some to be Jane herself, still keeping watch over the homestead she built from grief.
