Why is St Bathans said to be haunted?

St Bathans, once called Dunstan Creek, boomed as a gold and coal mining town during the Otago gold rush of the 1860s and 70s before slipping into quiet decline once the seams ran dry; mining finally stopped in 1934, leaving behind Blue Lake, a deep flooded pit carved out of Kildare Hill by decades of sluicing. At the heart of the well-preserved main street stands the Vulcan Hotel, built in 1882, whose room 1 is the epicentre of the town's best-known ghost story: the spirit of a woman locals call Rose, a prostitute said to have worked in the hotel in the 19th century and to have died there, possibly murdered by a jealous client. Guests who have stayed in the room describe cold drafts, moved belongings and a distinct sense of being watched, and staff say Rose is generally considered a mischievous rather than malevolent presence, more inclined to hide a hairbrush than cause real harm.
