What is Memphre?

Memphre is the serpentine creature said to inhabit Lake Memphremagog, the long glacial lake straddling the Quebec-Vermont border. The first documented sighting dates to 1816, when a fisherman near Owl's Head reported a long, dark hump breaking the surface; by the early 1900s reports had piled up on both the Canadian and American shores. Witnesses describe a creature 15 to 40 feet long, with a serpentine body, a small head, and dark glistening skin, moving in vertical undulations rather than side to side like a fish. One 19th-century account reads: "It moved like a great black snake laid upon the water, and made for the deep before we could row closer." Researcher Barbara Malloy later catalogued over 200 reported encounters spanning two centuries, giving the legend its modern name and shape. Skeptics note that Memphremagog is deep, cold, and heavily trafficked by boats, ideal conditions for misidentifying sturgeon, floating logs, otters swimming in line, or the wind-driven standing waves called seiches. No carcass, clear photograph, or sonar trace has ever confirmed a large unknown animal, yet Memphre endures as civic folklore, celebrated with a lakeside statue and an annual summer festival in Magog.
