Why is Dundurn Castle said to be haunted?
Completed in 1835 for Sir Allan Napier MacNab — a lawyer, railway promoter, and eventually co-premier of the Province of Canada — Dundurn Castle in Hamilton, Ontario, was restored decades ago to its appearance in 1855, the year MacNab's fortunes and health were both in decline. Museum staff and volunteers who have worked the forty-room mansion over the years describe footsteps on the servants' stairs after hours, doors in the family wing swinging shut unaided, and cold patches lingering in MacNab's old study regardless of the season. Some visitors report glimpsing a figure in period dress near the top of the main staircase, which docents half-jokingly attribute to MacNab himself, reluctant to leave the grand house he nearly bankrupted himself to build.
