What is Ogopogo?

Ogopogo is the name given to a long, serpentine lake monster said to dwell in Okanagan Lake, British Columbia, usually described as a dark, multi-humped creature undulating through the water. The legend draws on older stories from the Syilx (Okanagan) people, who spoke of a powerful lake spirit, N'ha-a-itk, tied to a particular rocky point and respected, even feared, by those crossing the lake. Settlers began reporting their own sightings in the early 20th century, and a particularly large 1926 sighting, witnessed from the shore by dozens of motorists along the lake road, drew national newspaper coverage and helped cement the creature's modern fame, alongside the whimsical name "Ogopogo," popularized that same decade. Occasional photographs or sonar readings followed in later years, none ever considered conclusive. Skeptics point to floating logs, wind-driven waves, otters or beavers swimming in a line, sturgeon, and pareidolia as the likely sources. Ogopogo has since become a beloved regional icon for the Okanagan Valley, fueling tourism and local pride while remaining scientifically unverified.
