Why is Casa Loma said to be haunted?
Casa Loma rises above midtown Toronto, a Gothic Revival castle built between 1911 and 1914 for financier Sir Henry Pellatt, who wanted secret passages, an 800-foot tunnel to his stables, and a wine cellar built like a bank vault. Pellatt lost his fortune in the 1920s and died in 1939 in a modest rented house, unable to afford the property he had created. Guides and overnight staff have long described footsteps echoing on the grand staircase after hours, sudden cold spots in the tunnel, and a figure in formal evening dress glimpsed crossing the Great Hall. Many assume it is Pellatt, reluctant to leave the home he built and lost. One former security guard recalled hearing 'someone walking in shoes that don't belong to anyone in the building.' Staff still make a point of checking the tower rooms twice before locking up for the night.
