Why is French Fort Cove said to be haunted?
French Fort Cove, now a nature park in Miramichi, New Brunswick, carries one of the region's oldest ghost stories: the Headless Nun. Tradition dates the tale to 1758, when a nun known as Sister Marie Inconnue was returning to the cove after helping deliver a baby and was attacked and beheaded β accounts differ on whether by a lone trapper or by sailors hunting for hidden Acadian treasure said to be buried nearby. Since then, locals have reported a headless figure near the water, either guarding the treasure or still searching for her missing head. The legend has outlasted the fort that gave the cove its name, and today a local theatre company runs guided 'headless nun' tours along the same trails used for kayaking and hiking.
