Why is Banff Springs Hotel said to be haunted?
The Canadian Pacific Railway opened the Banff Springs Hotel in 1888 to draw tourists to the Rockies, and by the time the current stone château was completed in the 1920s the hotel had already accumulated the ghost stories that still circulate among staff. The best known involves a young bride who, the story goes, tripped on her wedding dress on the marble staircase sometime in the early 20th century, either falling to her death or catching her gown alight from candles lining the stairs; she is said to still be seen dancing in a faded white gown near the Cascade Ballroom. Room 873 carries a separate, more disputed legend of a family murdered there, said to have been sealed and bricked over by hotel management after guests kept reporting handprints appearing on the bathroom mirror. Bellhop Sam Macauley, who worked at the hotel for decades until his death, is remembered fondly by staff as a "helpful ghost" still said to assist guests with their luggage on the eighth floor.
