London, Ontario's Grand Theatre, opened in 1901 and rebuilt after a 1900s-era fire, is closely tied in local ghost lore to Ambrose Small, the flamboyant Ontario theatre magnate who sold his chain of playhouses for a fortune on 2 December 1919 and then vanished without a trace the same day, one of Canada's most famous unsolved disappearances. Because Small once owned or controlled theatres across the province, including in London, staff and performers have long reported his ghost β footsteps in empty aisles, a top-hatted figure glimpsed backstage, lights flickering during rehearsals β as haunting several Ontario playhouses connected to his career. Grand Theatre crew members still half-jokingly leave a seat or a light on for him, a version of the "ghost light" tradition many old theatres keep out of superstition.
