Why is Forbidden Plateau said to be haunted?
The name Forbidden Plateau, on Vancouver Island's rugged interior, comes from a Comox First Nations tradition warning that the high alpine meadows were dangerous ground: according to the account passed down and later recorded by settlers, a group of women and children sent to the plateau for safety during an intertribal conflict vanished and were never found, leading elders to forbid anyone from returning there. Later hikers and prospectors in the early 20th century reported unexplained sounds, disorientation, and a persistent sense of being watched among the plateau's meadows and tarns, feeding the belief that something in the terrain β supernatural or otherwise β still claims those who wander too far off the marked trails. The name has stuck on maps ever since, even as the area became a popular hiking and ski destination.
