Why is Nahanni National Park Reserve said to be haunted?
Deep in Canada's Northwest Territories, the Nahanni region earned the grim nickname "Headless Valley" after a series of unsolved deaths in the early 20th century, most famously the 1908 discovery of prospector brothers Willie and Frank McLeod, found in the valley with their skulls missing β a case never solved despite decades of speculation about their fate. Further disappearances and deaths followed over subsequent decades, feeding rumors of a hidden tribe, a curse tied to the valley's hot springs, or simply the area's genuine and considerable danger: sheer canyon walls up to 1,000 meters high, unpredictable weather, and terrain still difficult to access today. The South Nahanni River carved four major canyons through the Mackenzie Mountains, and the reserve became one of the first sites inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage list in 1978, valued equally for its dramatic geology and the persistent, unsettling folklore that still keeps the "Headless Valley" name in circulation among northern trappers and guides.
