LOCATION
Why is Khao Lak said to be haunted?
Khao Lak was a quiet string of fishing villages and beach resorts on the Andaman coast of Phang Nga Province before 26 December 2004, when the Indian Ocean tsunami, triggered by a magnitude 9.1 earthquake off Sumatra, struck the low-lying coastline with waves reportedly reaching over 10 metres in places, killing thousands of residents and tourists and making Khao Lak one of the hardest-hit areas in Thailand. In the months that followed, local taxi and tuk-tuk drivers began telling reporters β accounts later picked up by international press β that they had picked up foreign passengers late at night asking to be taken to the airport, only for the seats to be empty when they turned around to collect the fare. Fishermen along this stretch of coast also spoke of hearing voices and seeing figures near the water after dark in the years following the disaster. Today Khao Lak has been rebuilt as a resort destination, with a tsunami memorial park and a beached police boat preserved as a monument to the dead.
