Why is Ratchaprasong said to be haunted?
At the Ratchaprasong intersection in central Bangkok stands the Erawan Shrine, erected in 1956 after workers building the adjacent Erawan Hotel suffered a string of fatal accidents during construction. Following advice that the site had disturbed local spirits, developers installed a golden statue of the four-faced Brahma, Phra Phrom; the mishaps reportedly stopped soon after, and the shrine has drawn worshippers seeking protection ever since. In March 2006, a mentally disturbed man smashed the statue with a hammer and was beaten to death by bystanders within minutes, an event locals still describe as spiritual retribution. The intersection was also the epicenter of Thailand's 2010 political crackdown; some vendors and soldiers who worked the area afterward speak of unease near where barricades once stood.
