Why is Wat Kudi Dao said to be haunted?

Restored in 1711 under King Thai Sa, Wat Kudi Dao sits away from Ayutthaya's main tourist island, and its isolation has fed a specific ghost story. In December 1960, Prince Birabongse Bhanudej — the Thai royal and racing driver known as 'B. Bira' — reported seeing a headless male apparition at the ruined temple, identified in local telling as Pu Som Fao Sap, a guardian spirit said to watch over treasures buried in the grounds. Villagers nearby still refer to a protective figure, Luang Pu Som, believed to linger around the crumbling chedi. Whether the prince saw a trick of moonlight or something else, the story stuck to the temple's ruins, and visitors who arrive at dusk, when the site empties out, often say the atmosphere alone is enough to explain the legend.
