Why is Seacliff Lunatic Asylum said to be haunted?
When Seacliff Lunatic Asylum opened north of Dunedin in 1884, it was the largest building in New Zealand, a sprawling Gothic pile designed by Robert Lawson whose scale and ambition outran the ground it was built on; poor foundations caused sections to crack and partially collapse within years of opening. Its darkest hour came on the night of 8 December 1942, when fire broke out in the wooden Ward 5, housing some of the hospital's most vulnerable female patients; the ward's doors were kept locked as a matter of routine, and by the time staff could reach the keys, 37 women had died inside, unable to escape the flames. Among the thousands treated at Seacliff over its history was a young writer named Janet Frame, misdiagnosed with schizophrenia and nearly subjected to a lobotomy before a literary prize saved her. Demolished in the 1950s after the fire and years of decline, locals still describe an oppressive stillness where Ward 5 once stood.
