What is Burrunjor?
In the remote sandstone escarpments of Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Aboriginal oral tradition and later station-worker testimony from the 1970s describe Burrunjor, a massive bipedal reptile up to seven meters tall, said to leave three-toed tracks and a roar that carries across the gorges at night. Reports gathered by cryptozoologist Rex Gilroy in that decade quoted stockmen claiming cattle had been dragged off and partially eaten, with one grazier recalling: "it stood up like a man but had the head of something out of the old rock, and it screamed once before it was gone." Believers tie the creature to Australia's genuine fossil record of large theropod dinosaurs, arguing the continent's vast, sparsely surveyed interior could theoretically hide a relict population. Mainstream paleontologists point out no dinosaur lineage is known to have survived the end-Cretaceous extinction anywhere on Earth, and attribute sightings to large feral animals, misidentified emus, or folklore blending with genuine Aboriginal creation stories about giant ancestral beings.
