Why is Aradale Mental Hospital said to be haunted?
Aradale Mental Hospital opened in Ararat, Victoria in 1867 as the Ararat Lunatic Asylum and, at its peak, housed more than 1,000 patients across dozens of bluestone buildings before closing in 1998. Former nurses and later ghost-tour guides describe cold spots and disembodied crying in Ward 2, and the notorious "J Ward," a separate criminal wing that once held the colony's most dangerous inmates, is frequently cited for unexplained bangs and shadow figures glimpsed in cells. Staff records document at least one patient death by hanging on-site in the early 20th century, an incident often referenced in tours as the source of activity in that wing. One guide recalled a visitor fainting in the old morgue after reporting "someone breathing" behind her.
