Why is Princess Theatre (Melbourne) said to be haunted?
Melbourne's Princess Theatre, rebuilt in its current Second Empire style in 1886, holds Australia's most famous theatrical ghost story. On March 3, 1888, Italian-born baritone Frederick Federici collapsed and died of a heart attack moments after descending through a stage trapdoor at the end of a performance as Mephistopheles in Gounod's Faust; the cast, still onstage, reportedly never learned of his death until after the curtain fell. Within weeks, cast and crew began reporting a figure resembling Federici seen in the dress circle on opening nights, and the tradition took hold that a seat should be left empty for him at every Princess Theatre premiere, a custom some staff say is still quietly honored today. Stagehands over the decades have also described cold drafts near the old trapdoor mechanism and unexplained footsteps crossing the empty stage after the last patron leaves.
