Why is St. John's Orphanage said to be haunted?
St. John's Orphanage opened in Goulburn, New South Wales, in 1913, its foundation stone blessed by Bishop John Gallagher, and it housed boys under the care of the Christian Brothers until amalgamating with the neighboring girls' orphanage in 1976. Decades later, former residents came forward with accounts of severe physical and emotional abuse suffered inside the institution during the mid-twentieth century, testimony that surfaced publicly in the 1990s and again during Australia's Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in the 2010s. Locals and later visitors to the now-closed building have long linked that history to reports of children's voices and crying heard in empty corridors, and a heavy, oppressive feeling many say sets in the moment they step inside. Former staff describe it less as a place of playful hauntings than as a building that seems to hold its history in its walls.
