What is Yara-ma-yha-who?

Aboriginal storytellers across eastern Australia, particularly Queensland's fig-forest country, describe the Yara-ma-yha-who as a small, red-skinned, frog-mouthed creature that lurks in the branches of wild fig trees, dropping onto travelers who pause to rest in the shade below. It was said to have sucker-tipped fingers and toes that drain a victim's blood without killing them, then swallow the drained body whole before regurgitating it alive but slightly shorter and redder than before, repeating the ordeal until the victim gradually transforms into another Yara-ma-yha-who: "each time it swallows you, a little more of you stays behind." Missionaries recording the story in the 1800s framed it as a caution against sleeping unattended beneath isolated fig trees, genuinely risky ground given venomous snakes and falling branches common to that habitat. Folklorists read the tale as a memorable device teaching children to stay alert and stay with the group while traveling through fig-forest country.
