What is Tarasque?

The Tarasque is a legendary dragon-like beast from the folklore of Provence, southern France, tied to the town of Tarascon on the Rhône river, which took its name from the creature. It was described as an amphibious hybrid monster: a lion-like head, a turtle-style armored shell, six bear-like legs, and a long scaly tail ending in a scorpion sting, said to lurk in the river and marshes, capsizing boats and devouring travelers and livestock. The fullest early account appears around 1260 in Jacobus de Voragine's Golden Legend, which describes "a dragon, half beast and half fish, greater than an ox, longer than an horse, having teeth sharp as a sword, and horned on either side, head like a lion... and defended him with two wings on either side." The same text tells how Saint Martha calmed the beast with prayer, hymns, and holy water so villagers could bind it and lead it into town without violence. Folklorists read the Tarasque less as a literal animal and more as a memory of destructive Rhône floods or older pagan river cults reshaped through Christian legend. Today it survives mainly as the star of Tarascon's UNESCO-listed Fête de la Tarasque, a costumed parade rather than any claim of a living creature.
