Why is Château de Brissac said to be haunted?

Rising eight stories above the Loire Valley, the Château de Brissac is known as the tallest château in France — and, according to generations of residents, one of the most haunted. Its resident spirit is "la Dame Verte," the Green Lady, believed to be Charlotte de Brézé, illegitimate daughter of King Charles VII. As the story goes, in 1477 her husband, Jacques de Brézé, discovered her with a lover and murdered them both, later hiding the crime; workers restoring the chapel tower centuries later reportedly found a walled-up skeleton with a crushed skull. Since then, guests staying in the tower room have described being woken by mournful groans in the night and glimpsing a green-tinted, sorrowful figure drifting through the corridor before dawn. The Marquis and family who still occupy part of the château today speak of the Dame Verte matter-of-factly, as a resident who simply never left.
