Deep in the Brittany countryside near the Paimpont forest, the moated Château de Trécesson is best known for the legend of the "Dame Blanche de Trécesson," the White Lady. According to the story, which circulated widely by the 18th century, workers digging near the castle's moat discovered the skeleton of a young woman still dressed in a wedding gown, said to have been buried alive after being caught by her family fleeing to marry a lover of whom they disapproved. Locals came to believe her ghost never left the grounds, and generations of residents have reported seeing a pale, veiled figure crossing the water or the surrounding woods on quiet nights. The medieval castle, still privately owned and listed as a French historic monument since 2012, keeps the tale alive as part of its identity, and it remains one of Brittany's most recognizable ghost stories.
