Why is Château de Montségur said to be haunted?

The ruined fortress crowning the Pyrenean peak of Montségur marks the site of one of the darkest episodes of the Albigensian Crusade. After a ten-month siege by royal and Church forces, the last stronghold of the Cathars surrendered on 16 March 1244, and roughly 200 Cathar perfecti who refused to renounce their faith walked, or were pushed, down the mountain to a field at its base — remembered since as the Prat dels Cremats, the "Field of the Burned" — where they were burned alive on a mass pyre. Occitan legend holds that four Cathars escaped the night before with a hidden treasure, fueling centuries of speculation linking Montségur to the Holy Grail. Visitors climbing the steep path to the ruins today describe an unusual heaviness in the air near the field below, and locals say that on the anniversary of the surrender a cold wind rises from nowhere at dusk.
