Why is Château de Châteaubriant said to be haunted?
The Château de Châteaubriant, in the Loire-Atlantique region of France, grew from an 11th-century border fortress defending Brittany into a Renaissance residence, but the wing most associated with its ghost story is the tower where Françoise de Foix was held. As mistress of King Francis I, Françoise drew the jealousy of her husband Jean de Laval, who is said to have imprisoned her in the castle tower upon the king's death in 1547 and to have had her poisoned there shortly after, ending her life in secrecy. Local tradition holds that her spirit never left the tower, and generations of visitors and staff have reported cold drafts, a sense of being watched, and glimpses of a pale figure at the tower's windows on winter evenings. The medieval keep and Renaissance apartments, restored and opened to the public, still draw visitors as much for Françoise's tragic story as for the castle's architecture.
