What is the legend of Melusine of Lusignan?

The noble house of Lusignan in western France once claimed descent from a water-fairy, and their tale is among the most famous of European folklore. A lord named Raymondin, lost in a forest, met a beautiful woman beside a fountain and fell instantly in love. Melusine agreed to marry him and brought him great fortune, raising castles and cities in a single night, but she made him swear one condition: never to look upon her on a Saturday. For years he kept his word, and she bore him sons, though several were strangely marked. At last, poisoned by a jealous kinsman's whispers, Raymondin spied on her through a crack and saw the truth: from the waist down his wife was a great serpent, her scaled tail coiling in the bath. She forgave the glimpse, but when he later denounced her aloud as a serpent before his court, the spell broke. Melusine cried out, transformed into a winged dragon, and flew away over the towers of Lusignan forever, returning only, they said, to wail before the death of each of her descendants.
