Why is Aokigahara Forest said to be haunted?

Aokigahara grew from lava flows left by Mount Fuji's eruption in 864, and the dense, root-tangled woodland that now covers that hardened rock is famous in Japan for an eerie silence โ€” the trees grow so thick that wind barely stirs them, and compasses are said to misbehave near its volcanic soil, feeding centuries-old beliefs that the forest is haunted by yลซrei, restless spirits unable to pass on. Older folklore ties the forest to ubasute, the purported historical practice of abandoning the elderly or infirm in remote places during famine, said to have left it thick with wandering ghosts long before it gained a modern reputation. That reputation deepened sharply after novelist Seichล Matsumoto's 1960 novel "Kuroi Jukai" ended with a tragic scene set among its trees, and the forest has since become closely associated with loss and mourning, prompting authorities to post signs urging visitors in distress to seek help.
