Why is Himeji Castle said to be haunted?

Himeji Castle's brilliant white ramparts hide one of Japan's most famous ghost stories, the legend of Okiku's well. According to the tale, first recorded in the 18th century as the kabuki drama "Banchō Sarayashiki," a servant named Okiku was entrusted with ten precious porcelain plates by a samurai retainer. When one turned up missing — some versions say it was hidden by the retainer himself after she refused his advances — she was accused of theft, tortured, and thrown down a well within the castle grounds to die. Visitors and castle staff have long claimed that on quiet nights a woman's voice rises from the well, counting plates one by one — "ichimai, nimai... kyuumai" — before breaking into a mournful scream when the tenth is never reached. The castle, largely completed in 1609 under Ikeda Terumasa, has survived earthquakes, fires and World War II bombing raids untouched.
