Why is Devil's Sea said to be haunted?
West of the open Pacific south of Tokyo lies the Devil's Sea, known in Japanese as Ma no Umi, an area Japanese fishermen have regarded with unease for generations due to a string of vessel disappearances. The modern legend gained international traction in the 1950s when a series of Japanese research and fishing boats reportedly vanished without distress signals, prompting the government to commission the survey ship Kaiyo Maru No. 5 to investigate in 1952 β a ship that itself disappeared with its crew of 31 during the mission. Writers later folded the Devil's Sea into the same genre of ocean mystery as the Bermuda Triangle, dubbing it the "Dragon's Triangle." The region sits near an active volcanic and seismic zone, with underwater eruptions capable of producing sudden new islands or shoals, which oceanographers point to as a far more plausible explanation than any supernatural cause for ships lost there.
