What is Tsuchinoko?

The tsuchinoko is a legendary snake-like creature from Japanese folklore, described as short and unusually thick-bodied, sometimes said to have fangs, a distinct neck, and the ability to jump or roll like a hoop. Reports come from mountainous and rural areas across Japan, particularly in the Kansai and Chugoku regions, where tales of a stubby, venomous serpent have circulated for generations and may echo ancient references to mysterious snakes in early Japanese texts. Interest surged when the town of Nose, near Osaka, began offering a cash reward for a captured specimen in 2000, a bounty soon matched by other municipalities and raised over the years to keep drawing amateur searches and media coverage. No confirmed specimen has ever been produced. Skeptics suggest sightings stem from ordinary snakes with a prey-swollen belly, or from blue-tongued skinks and other reptiles whose stocky build resembles the description. Despite the lack of evidence, the tsuchinoko remains a popular figure in Japanese cryptozoology, souvenir shops, and regional tourism campaigns.
