What is the legend of Hachishakusama, the Eight-Foot-Tall Woman?

One of Japan's most unsettling modern urban legends, Hachishakusama emerged from internet message boards in the 2000s but is told as though passed down in a rural Japanese town. Her name means roughly the Eight-Foot-Tall Woman, and she is described as an impossibly tall figure in a white dress and sun hat, gliding just above the ground and uttering a low, repeating sound like po po po. According to the best-known account, a boy visiting his grandparents glimpses her over the garden wall; the elders react with terror, revealing that she is a malevolent spirit who fixates on children and, once she has chosen a victim, will take them within days. The family hurriedly hides the boy in a room warded with salt and Buddhist charms, warning him never to look outside no matter what voices he hears. Through the night the entity mimics familiar voices to lure him out, and only elaborate rituals and a hasty escape save him. Though wholly a work of contemporary folklore, Hachishakusama endures for the primal dread of a towering watcher that cannot be outrun.
