What is Kappa?

The kappa is a water-dwelling creature from Japanese folklore, usually described as roughly child-sized, with green or yellow scaly or slimy skin, a turtle-like shell, webbed hands and feet, a beak-like mouth, and a shallow, water-filled depression on top of its head said to be the source of its strength. Stories place it in rivers, ponds, and irrigation canals across Japan, with especially rich traditions in rural regions where farmers relied on waterways; the creature was already being catalogued in print by 1781, when artist Toriyama Sekien included it in his illustrated yokai compendium Konjaku Hyakki Shui. Tales describe it pulling livestock or unwary children underwater, challenging people to sumo wrestling, and being placated with offerings of cucumbers, its favorite food. An old Japanese proverb, kappa no kawa nagare, "even a kappa can be swept away by the river," warns that even the most skilled can fail at their own specialty. Warnings about the kappa likely functioned as cautionary folklore to keep children away from dangerous water, and some researchers trace its imagery to misidentified soft-shell turtles, otters, or drowned bodies. No physical evidence supports its existence, but the kappa remains one of Japan's most beloved yokai.
