What is the legend of Momotaro, the Peach Boy?
In the countryside around Okayama, storytellers have long delighted children with the tale of Momotaro, the boy born from a peach. An old childless couple find a giant peach floating down a river; when they cut it open, a healthy infant leaps out, declared a gift from the gods. Raised with love, Momotaro grows strong and kind, and one day resolves to sail to distant Onigashima, the Island of Demons, to end the ogres who terrorise the land. His mother packs him millet dumplings called kibi dango, and along the road he shares them with a talking dog, a monkey and a pheasant, each of whom pledges loyalty in return. Together the unlikely band crosses the sea, storms the demons' fortress, and defeats their fearsome chief, freeing the treasure the ogres had stolen from villages. Momotaro returns home in triumph to his ageing parents. Beloved for its lessons of courage, generosity and teamwork, the story is so tied to Okayama that the city celebrates him with statues, festivals and its famous kibi dango sweets.
