What is the legend of Urashima Taro and the Sea Palace?

Along the coast of the Sea of Japan, fishing villages have long told of Urashima Taro, a kind young fisherman rewarded and undone by a single act of mercy. One day he saves a small turtle tormented by children on the beach and sets it free. Soon after, a great turtle returns to thank him and carries him beneath the waves to the Dragon Palace of Ryugu-jo, home of the sea god, where the beautiful princess Otohime welcomes him. There Urashima lives in delight amid coral halls and endless feasts, and what feels like a few days of bliss stretches on. At last he longs to see his ageing mother, and the princess sends him home with a mysterious lacquered box, begging him never to open it. Returning to shore, he finds his village strange and his family long dead; centuries have passed in the world above. Bewildered and grieving, he opens the forbidden box, and a puff of white smoke rises. In an instant the years catch him: his hair turns white and he ages into a frail old man, the price of a paradise outside of time.
