Why is Aokigahara said to be haunted?
Aokigahara, the dense forest blanketing the northwestern base of Mount Fuji, grew up on lava rock left by the volcano's last major eruption in 864 CE, and its porous ground swallows sound so thoroughly that visitors often describe an unnatural, total silence beneath the canopy โ hence its nickname, Jukai, the "Sea of Trees." Older folklore ties the forest to ubasute, the practice tradition attributes to famine years of leaving elderly or infirm relatives to die in remote wilderness, and locals have long spoken of the restless spirits, or yลซrei, of those abandoned there. The forest's grim modern reputation was cemented by Seichล Matsumoto's 1960 novel "Kuroi Jukai," which used Aokigahara as a setting and is widely credited with fixing its association with suicide in the public imagination. Rangers still find handwritten signs pinned to trees near the trailheads urging anyone who has wandered in to reconsider and reach out for help.
