What is Akkorokamui?
Ainu communities along Hokkaido's Uchiura Bay have long spoken of Akkorokamui, a crimson, glowing mass said to surge from the depths and drag boats under with arms reported to stretch over a hundred meters. Ethnographers transcribing Ainu yukar epics in the early 1900s, around 1913, recorded elders describing the sea itself changing color before an attack: "the water burned red, and then it was gone." Fishermen avoided certain coves near Volcano Bay after dusk, leaving offerings of sake rather than risk its reach. Some accounts tie the legend to seasonal red tides from algal blooms, which do stain coastal waters a rusty hue and can precede fish die-offs that locals may have read as a hungry deity stirring below. Giant Pacific octopuses inhabit these cold waters and can span several meters, likely seeding a kernel of truth that oral tradition swelled into a sea god vast enough to swallow ships whole.
