What is Aswang?

The Aswang is a broad and shape-shifting figure from Philippine folklore, most strongly associated with the Visayas region, particularly Capiz province, which is sometimes nicknamed the country's "aswang capital." Depending on the local variant it can appear as a seemingly ordinary neighbor by day who transforms at night into a vampire-like ghoul, a self-segmenting viscera sucker that detaches its upper torso to fly and feed on fetuses, or a dog-like or pig-like monster that preys on corpses and the sick. Its roots lie in pre-Hispanic animist beliefs about malevolent spirits and witches; one of the earliest written mentions of the "asuang" appears in 1609, in Antonio de Morga's chronicle Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas, which Spanish colonial-era writers reinterpreted through a Catholic lens of demonic possession, cementing the aswang as a moral cautionary figure used to explain unexplained deaths, illnesses or grave disturbances in small communities. The legend has also historically been exploited, including by wartime psychological operations that spread aswang rumors to intimidate rural populations. Modern skepticism attributes the tradition to a mix of social scapegoating, fear of the unknown, misidentified nocturnal animals and genuine but misunderstood medical conditions.
