Why is Fort Santiago said to be haunted?

Built in 1571 by Spanish conquistador Miguel López de Legazpi at the mouth of the Pasig River, Fort Santiago anchored the walled city of Intramuros for more than three centuries and became one of the bloodiest sites in Philippine history. National hero José Rizal was held in its dungeons before his execution by firing squad in December 1896, and bronze footprints set into the ground still trace his final walk from cell to execution site at what is now Rizal Park. Far worse came during the Japanese occupation of World War II, when soldiers packed prisoners into the fort's low-lying dungeons; according to postwar accounts, on at least one occasion dozens were locked inside as the tide rose through the chamber and drowned before anyone could reach them. Visitors and guards on the grounds have long reported disembodied cries and gasping sounds echoing from the old dungeon at night, and a chill some attribute to Rizal himself lingering near the shrine built in his memory.
