Why is Manila City Hall said to be haunted?

Completed in 1941 and rebuilt after the devastating 1945 Battle of Manila, City Hall's clock tower is the epicenter of the building's ghost lore. Employees tell of a man who hanged himself there, and staff are informally advised to leave the premises before 6 p.m. to avoid encounters with spirits said to wander the corridors after hours. Paranormal investigators who examined the site reported poltergeist-like activity and what they described as residual hauntings connected to the Japanese occupation and a woman believed to have died in the building during the war. Locals also note a grim visual coincidence: viewed from above, the building's compact wartime-rebuilt floor plan resembles a coffin — a detail Manileños often cite as fitting for a hall whose history is inseparable from a battle that killed over 100,000 people.
