Why is University of Santo Tomas said to be haunted?
Founded in 1611 by the Dominican friar Miguel de Benavides, the University of Santo Tomas holds the oldest extant university charter in Asia, and its Manila campus carries a wartime history darker than its academic pedigree suggests. When Japanese forces occupied Manila in January 1942, they converted the university into the Santo Tomas Internment Camp, confining more than 3,000 American, British and other Allied civilians — men, women and children — inside its walls for over three years under worsening hunger and disease, until American troops liberated the camp on 3 February 1945. Students and staff in the Main Building, whose bell tower and Gothic Revival facade were used as a lookout point during the occupation, have long described a residual heaviness in the older corridors, particularly around areas once used to hold sick and dying internees, along with occasional unexplained footsteps climbing the tower stairs after the campus empties for the night.
