Why is Malacañang Palace said to be haunted?

Malacañang Palace has served as the seat of Philippine political power since Spanish colonial times, purchased by the colonial government in 1825 from a private owner and expanded into the presidential residence it became after independence. Its corridors have witnessed the country's most turbulent transitions of power, from the Japanese occupation of the 1940s to the fall of the Marcos regime in February 1986, when crowds stormed the grounds after the family fled by helicopter, leaving behind personal belongings that later went on public display. Staff and long-serving palace employees have long traded stories of unexplained footsteps in the older wings at night and cold drafts in rooms once used by presidents who died in office, tales rarely discussed publicly given the palace's continuing role as a working seat of government. The complex today comprises numerous mansions and offices along the Pasig River in the San Miguel district.
