Why is Manila Film Center said to be haunted?
The Manila Film Center was thrown up in a matter of months in 1981 so it could host the First Manila International Film Festival in January 1982, part of Imelda Marcos's drive to showcase the Philippines on the world stage. To meet the deadline, construction crews worked around the clock, and on 17 November 1981 scaffolding collapsed, sending workers plunging into wet concrete on the lower floors; persistent legend holds that some of the roughly 169 men trapped were left entombed in the quick-drying material so the schedule would not slip, though official counts of the dead are far lower and the full truth has never been settled. The festival opened on time regardless, but the building's later years as an event venue were plagued by accounts of cold spots, disembodied screams, and cameras and lighting rigs failing without explanation, prompting at least one televised exorcism attempt in the 1980s.
