Why is Cortijo Jurado said to be haunted?
On a rise beside the road into Campanillas, on the outskirts of Málaga in Andalusia, stands Cortijo Jurado, a bourgeois agricultural estate raised between 1830 and 1840 by the Heredia family — reputedly to the design of a French architect, in an eclectic style mixing English neo-Gothic with Nordic touches, its 2,500 square metres arranged around a central courtyard. Bankrupt, the Heredias sold it to the Larios family in 1925. The dark chapters of its file begin underground: local tradition speaks of a two-kilometre tunnel linking the estate with Cortijo Colmenares, sealed with concrete around 1950; in 1942 a young man named Manuel Martín claimed to have entered one abandoned passage and found a chamber with torture devices and scattered bones. Oral testimony adds that under later owners the house served as a gambling den or even a brothel. Restored in 2014 and offered for sixteen million euros without takers, it was bought in late 2022 by Grupo Sinerba, which plans an office complex.
