What is the legend of The Mountain of Souls?
On the outskirts of Soria, in Castilla y León, rises a wooded hill once fought over by the Knights Templar and the Order of San Juan. According to tradition, after the Templars were expelled the local nobles kept hunting there despite warnings, until a Night of All Souls when the spirits of dead knights were said to rise from their graves and roam the hill seeking vengeance on trespassers. The most famous version, popularized by Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer in his 1861 short story, tells of a young noblewoman, Beatriz, who mockingly dares her cousin Alonso to retrieve a scarf she 'loses' on the haunted mount during the Night of the Dead. Alonso rides out to prove his courage and is never seen alive again; only his mangled body and a rosary clutched in his hand are found the next morning, along with strange scratch marks on Beatriz's own bedroom door. Locals in Soria still call the ruined hill El Monte de las Ánimas and avoid it after dark on November 1st, when, so the story goes, the church bells of San Juan de Duero toll on their own and the dead walk again.
