Bélmez Faces

In August 1971, María Gómez Cámara noticed a crude face staring up from the kitchen floor of her home on Calle Real in Bélmez de la Moraleda, Jaén. When the family destroyed and repaved the concrete, new faces reappeared within days, sparking one of Spain's most investigated paranormal cases. Parapsychologists, including Hans Bender, and skeptics alike descended on the house through the 1970s; some visitors claimed the faces "changed expression" between visits, while critics suspected acid etching. In 2004, after María's death, excavation beneath the floor reportedly uncovered human remains, fueling theories the house sat atop an unmarked grave. Still standing, the house has drawn pilgrims, journalists and ghost hunters for over five decades.
