Why is Fort San said to be haunted?
Fort San began in 1917 as the Fort Qu'Appelle Sanatorium, built on the shores of Echo Lake in Saskatchewan's Qu'Appelle Valley to treat the tuberculosis epidemic that swept the prairies in the early twentieth century. Thousands of patients passed through its wards over the following decades, many isolated for months or years, and a number never left. After the sanatorium closed in 1972 and the grounds became home to the Saskatchewan Summer School of the Arts, students and staff sleeping in the old dormitory buildings began describing coughing sounds from empty rooms, a persistent antiseptic smell in corridors long since renovated, and the sensation of being watched from doorways at night. Longtime arts-camp counsellors have their own name for the sanatorium's former nurses' residence: "the building you don't sleep in alone."
