Why is Gibraltar Point Lighthouse said to be haunted?

The Gibraltar Point Lighthouse stands on Hanlan's Point, part of the Toronto Islands in Lake Ontario, Canada. Begun in 1808, it is the oldest surviving lighthouse on the Great Lakes and one of Toronto's oldest buildings. Its fame rests on the death of its first keeper, German-born John Paul Radelmüller, who was murdered in 1815 — the basis of what is often called Toronto's most enduring ghost story. Accounts say Radelmüller was killed by soldiers he had refused to sell liquor to, his body dismembered and scattered near the tower, and that his ghost still climbs the lighthouse stairs at night. Two soldiers were charged with the killing but ultimately acquitted for lack of a body, and modern research has since confirmed several details of the traditional account once dismissed as pure legend.
