Why is Tranquille, Kamloops said to be haunted?
The Tranquille site on Kamloops Lake began in 1907 as a tuberculosis sanatorium, treating thousands of patients through decades when the disease had no reliable cure, before being converted in the 1950s into an institution for people with developmental disabilities that operated until its controversial closure in 1983. Former staff, patients' families, and the urban explorers who wandered its abandoned wards for years afterward have long described the site as heavy with unresolved grief: cold corridors, the sound of coughing in empty rooms, and figures glimpsed in windows of buildings long stripped bare. Redevelopment of the property in recent years has removed or restricted access to much of the original site, but Tranquille remains one of British Columbia's most frequently cited haunted locations.
