Why is Caledonia Mills said to be haunted?
The small farming community of Caledonia Mills, in Nova Scotia's Antigonish County, became briefly famous around 1900 as the site of a mystery newspapers of the day compared to the Great Amherst case β the so-called Antigonish poltergeist, when the farmhouse of Alexander MacDonald reported fires breaking out spontaneously on walls, curtains, and furniture, sometimes dozens of times in a single day, centred on the presence of his adopted daughter, Mary Ellen. Investigators, journalists, and curious onlookers descended on the farm, and while skeptics later argued the girl had been secretly setting the fires herself, no fully satisfying explanation was ever agreed upon. The events made Caledonia Mills a minor landmark of North American poltergeist lore, still referenced in books on Canadian paranormal history well over a century later.
